Abstract paintings on canvas

Hand built canvases lay the groundwork for these original pieces.

From frame to paint everything is artist-made.

Emma Larkin is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montclair, NJ. In this series of process-oriented abstract paintings, she draws inspiration from the natural landscape. Each piece begins with broad washes of color, and then undergoes a process of addition and reduction in layers of paint, reflecting the the action of physical forces on the landscape over time. The visceral surface textures evoke a sense of history through the exposition of layers, drawing parallels between natural processes and the similarly accumulative and reductive human experiences of memory and nostalgia.
